TITLE Introduction to Pre-Clinical Skills

DESCRIPTION This study-unit is based both in the laboratory and the clinical setting. Students will familiarize themselves with the competences required to carry out a clinical examination initially on themselves and later on whilst on a clinical placement, on a patient. To achieve this, students will be taught the basics behind clinical assessment and the basic moving and handling techniques required to assess and treat a patient.

Study-unit Aims:

By the end of this study-unit, the students will be able to:

- carry out a clinical examination using a SOAP format;
- demonstrate a knowledge of anatomy;
- demonstrate the skill and knowledge of the principles of safe moving and handling techniques;
- demonstrate a knowledge on the prevention of repetitive strain injuries;
- demonstrate the ability to relate mechanical principles to movement;
- use different equipment required in manual and therapeutic handling.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- assess patients suffering from physical limitations imposed by injury, disease or disability;
- use this information to formulate a treatment plan.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- have the academic and necessary handling techniques required to be able to assess and handle a patient.
