Study-Unit Description

CODE PHT1067

TITLE Living Anatomy for Physiotherapists

UM LEVEL 01 - Year 1 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 3

DEPARTMENT Physiotherapy

DESCRIPTION The study-unit introduces the student to the application of anatomy from text book to body. Students will be required to locate anatomical landmarks on each other through careful and meaningful palpation. The study-unit is a year long with the intention to cover the upper part of the body in the first semester and the lower part of the body in the second semester.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is for students to integrate the knowledge acquired from the didactic anatomy lectures into more meaningful and problem based real-life examples.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Locate anatomical landmarks;
- Locate the attachments of tendons and ligaments;
- Explain the courses of important blood vessels and nerves;
- Identify dermatomes;
- Identify myotomes;
- Apply the knowledge of anatomy to the discovery and analysis of movement.

2. Skills

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Palpate bones, muscles, tendons and ligaments;
- Accurately mark the location of the muscles, tendons and ligaments;
- Accurately outline the distribution of dermatomes;
- Accurately place myotomes in action;
- Discuss the actions of muscles in simple and complex movements (including early simple biomechanical analysis).
