TITLE Nutrition for Physiotherapists

DESCRIPTION The study-unit will include topics on:

A balanced diet, Energy Requirement, The Nutrients, Nutrition in the Life Cycle, Overweight, Underweight, Weight Management, Energy Balance, Sports Nutrition, Nutritional Contributing Factors of Non-communicable Diseases, Cholesterol Formation and Antioxidants, Atherosclerosis and its role in CVA, CHD, PVD, Enteral and Parenteral Feeding, Nutrition in Diabetes, Nutritional requirement in ill health, Hydration, Arthritis - Special Dietary Needs?, Dietary management of gastrointestinal and other related diseases (e.g. Crohn's disease, Coeliac, Acute Diarrhoea, Post-gastrectomy, Dysphagia, Lactose Intolerance etc.) and Food Allergies vs Food Intolerances.

Study-unit Aims:

To equip students with enough knowledge to be able to guide against common misconceptions and give some general advice to patients and relatives. Also to understand the role of the nutritionist and identify patients who would benefit from such referrals.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- understand what a balanced diet is;
- understand the effects of malnutrition including those of being overweight and underweight;
- understand basic nutritional requirements of various stages in the life cycle;
- understand special dietary requirements in certain conditions.

2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills):
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- guide and advise patients and relatives on various aspects to do with nutrition and dietetics.
