| DESCRIPTION | Clinical education forms the framework for enhancement of evidence-based practice. This study-unit uses patient care as a basis for extending knowledge and competences. It comprises a clinical placement of approximately 210 hours. The student will acquire basic competences in the examination, treatment and management of clients with a neurological disorder under the supervision of named clinical physiotherapists and academic educators. The student will learn through guidance, feedback and self-criticism. Study-unit Aims: 1. Extend in depth and breadth the knowledge of surgical physiotherapy in relation to total patient care; 2. Expand ability to communicate effectively with all members of the patient care team with a view to enhancing quality of physiotherapy in surgical conditions; 3. Increase competence in treatment skills; 4. Rationalise treatment as a tool for progression and obtaining optimal results. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: a) demonstrate the role physiotherapy plays in individual patient care in general medicine and surgery and within the overall provision of care; b) use evidence to reason out and select effective treatment strategies; c) demonstrate the importance of accurate recording in clinical practice. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: a) treat a patient with a surgically influenced movement problem, based on an accurate patient assessment, evaluation of findings and identification of causative and compounding factors; b) use pertinent clinical skills safely to affect an immediate improvement in a patient's physical condition; c) communicate verbally and in handwritten form a clinical case using discussion as a means to reason out treatment choice and outcome prediction.
