DESCRIPTION This study-unit will go hand-in-hand with PHY3200 Physics Project and will contain the presentation components of the project. This means both the talk and the poster. Students will be asked to prepare a 15 minutes talk toward the end of the year on the topic of their physics project. Additionally they will present a poster of their work in special event to highlight the research being done by the undergraduates. The students will also sit for a short series of interactive lectures on presentation skills.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit will:
- provide training and some experience to improve presentation skills;
- train the candidate in scientific writing style through the preparation of a dissertation;
- basic understanding of Public Engagement with research, Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) and Dialogue;
- teaching oral communication skills.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- to introduce students to the theory behind general public speaking. These skills will be useful throughout the students career;
- have a background in the field of science communication.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- present the work done and the results obtained to an audience using an appropriate medium;
- defend the work carried out during the poster session;
- give engaging talks through the development of public speaking skills;
- communicate their own research to various sectors of the public;
- speak to audiences of different backgrounds and communicate technical and scientific language to a non-technical audience.

ADDITIONAL NOTES Pre-Requisite qualifications: Good knowledge of the various areas of physics covered in the first three years of an undergraduate degree physics joint degree and a good standard of English are expected.
