Study-Unit Description

CODE PLC1120

TITLE Liturgy and Language

UM LEVEL 01 - Year 1 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 2

DEPARTMENT Pastoral Theology, Liturgy and Canon Law

DESCRIPTION During this study-unit, particular attention is given to the twentieth century discussion of the vernacular issues during the Second Vatican Council and the post-conciliar period. The study-unit content is studied against the linguistic research of that time which was moving to new directions. The emergence of socio-linguistics opened our reflection to the relationship between language and society recognising language as a dynamic, varied and flexible reality.

Study-unit Aims

By the end of this unit, students will uncover the power of a living tongue that can transform communities of faith; the validity of the method of “dynamic equivalence” for liturgical translations; the contribution of 19th and 20th century translators in this field.
