DESCRIPTION Adolescence is a complex and turbulent part of life. During adolescence the individual faces challenges due to physical, psychological, social, intellectual, moral and religious growth and development.

Teachers who teach Religious Education in Secondary Schools need to be aware and to understand these dimensions and the challenges related to them in order to be able to successfully address them through Religious Education.

The Study-unit will first address this issue by delving into each of these dimensions of adolescent development. After having a clearer picture of who the adolescent is, then various moral issues which teachers will be dealing with in the class with adolescents will be studied from the point of view of the pedagogy which needs to be used to present these moral issues. Such moral issues will include: relationships with parents and peers, prayer, the development of conscience, sexuality and making choices in life.

The study-unit aims at giving students an adequate knowledge of each of the different dimensions of adolescent development and to use this knowledge in presenting specific themes and topics to adolescents in Religious Education classes.
