DESCRIPTION This unit offers an introduction to the history, theology and practice of Christian public worship, with particular reference to: the foundational practices of Eucharist and Christian initiation; the sacraments of healing - penance and anointing; the sacraments at the service of communion - weddings and ordinations; funerals; the liturgy of the hours; and the main liturgical celebrations of the tempi forti.

As a praxis-based study of history, theology and practice of worship this unit introduces students to a process of pastoral praxis through a method of keeping theological reflection in constant dialogue with liturgical action.

Study-Unit Aims:

This unit aims to provide students with in-depth exposure to the theology and praxis of Catholic liturgy. Special emphasis will be given to Vatican II and post-conciliar developments in the church’s self-understanding and in the theology and practice of ministry, sacraments, and liturgy. In this way this unit will equip Church ministers with the necessary theological tools for exercising pastoral ministry.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Appraise how the liturgy and the celebration of the sacraments forms the Christian community;
- Grasp how the liturgical actions function at both a structural as well as at a soteriological level;
- Comprehend the use of various liturgical symbols and their respective functions in liturgical celebrations;
- Categorize various liturgical celebrations and integrate their function vis-a`-vis pastoral praxis in the Christian community.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Systematize the various dimensions of liturgical celebrations;
- Animate actively different kinds of liturgical assemblies in a variety of contexts;
- Act as effective liturgical and pastoral leaders;
- Formulate ways how liturgical celebrations may be improved in order to achieve a more active and authentic participation in these acts of worship.
