DESCRIPTION The students are introduced to the basic clinical setting and mechanical care of adult foot pathologies in preparation for entry into the second year clinical component of the course. Students will have the opportunity to gain essential skills in podiatry practice. Integrating theoretical principles covered in POD1002 the student will practise a variety of techniques utilised in the management of skin disorders, infection control principles, construction of simple dressings and pads, patient communication skills and record keeping. This study-unit is covered through clinical placements. During these placements students should observe the qualified staff and assist to provide podiatric care.

Objectives:

At the end of the study unit, students should be able to:
- Demonstrate competency in the handling and processing of instruments.
- Outline the appropriate disposal of wastes and injury and accident reporting.
- Demonstrate a number of manual skills required in the debridement of skin lesions.
- Describe the use of and fabricate a variety of adhesive and replaceable felt pads.
- Demonstrate the use of a variety of podiatric instruments.
- Demonstrate an appreciation of the process which is required for effective communication, history taking and facilitation of patient care
- Be able to carry out certain basic clinical skills under the supervision of a member of the qualified staff.
- Start recognising the importance of the application of theoretical knowledge to clinical practice.

- Infection control in the clinical setting
- Padding and strapping demonstrations
- Demonstration and practice of instrument use
- Loading, unloading and disposal of scalpel blades
- Digital dressings and silicone devices
- Instrument cleaning and use of autoclaves
- Commonly used medicaments in podiatry
- Demonstration patients
- Patient education
