DESCRIPTION In this subject students undertake a comprehensive examination of the basic principles of management of cutaneous pathologies. Topics include structure and function of skin and its appendages, assessment, diagnosis, aetiological factors and management of disorders of the skin, with particular emphasis on common conditions, common infections and their management, diagnostic principles, testing procedures and dermatological terminology. This subject will mainly focus on dermatological conditions which are commonly encountered in podiatric practice, but other dermatological conditions will also be addressed.

Objectives:

At the end of the study unit, students will be able to:

- Describe the micro-anatomy and physiology of the skin and its adnexa, and associated disorders.
- Understand the process of keratinization and desquamation, and how altered processes may lead to common disorders.
- Comprehend the fundamental process of pigmentation of the skin and associated disorders.
- Explain the mechanical basis and development of cutaneous lesions,
- and appreciate the need to identify these factors in the clinical setting.
- Be familiar with the broad pharmacology of the more commonly used
- drugs in podiatric practice.
- Be able to describe some common infections of the lower extremity, their clinical signs and possible treatment.
- Understand and explain the significant age related changes in the integument, and use this knowledge to identify the causes of cutaneous pathology.
- Appreciate the discipline of dermatology, including relevant terminology, documentation and history taking techniques, and clinical investigation procedures.
- Show an understanding of the many verities of skin lesions and their particular relevance when found in the lower limb
- Identify and critically discuss the assessment of the many varieties of skin lesions and their particular relevance when found in the lower limb.
- Show an understanding in the diagnosis, aetiology and management of disorders of the skin and nails.
- Show an understanding in the anatomy, diagnosis, aetiology and management of disorders of the nails
- Show an understanding of the significance of the local manifestation with that of the underlying systemic conditions
- Show an understanding of the importance of any health/safety issues applicable to the management of cutaneous pathologies.
