DEPARTMENT Podiatry

DESCRIPTION This study-unit will focus on preparing students to work in different hospital settings, such as working in a rehabilitation hospital, psychiatric ward and geriatric hospital amongst others. This study unit will focus on podiatric interventions and different bedside approaches for different client groups with specific conditions such as cerebrovascular, orthopaedic, psychiatric and neurological conditions. This study unit will outline the management of the following common medical problems in long-term care; behavioural problems in dementia, acute infections in long term care, pressure ulcerations, falls and terminal care. Psychological issues in care especially how to motivate and support patients and relatives through the difficult process of rehabilitation will be reviewed.

The role of the podiatrist within an interdisciplinary team in caring for these particular patient groups will be discussed with the help of a number of case studies.

Issues of cross infection and principles of ethical decision making in medical care will also be addressed.
