DESCRIPTION Building on the overview of systemic conditions covered in physiology and general medicine credits, foot and lower limb manifestations associated with vascular, endocrine, neurological and immunosuppression will be explored. Particular emphasis will be placed on the foot at risk and podiatry assessment, diagnosis and management in context of a health profession team management approach. Diagnostic assessment techniques, both clinical and laboratory based will be covered. Special attention will be given to the diabetic foot.

Objectives:

At the end of the module, students will be able to:

- Show an understanding of the systemic and local pathologies which place the affected patient in a 'high risk' category.
- Show an understanding of the importance of history taking in such conditions
- Show an understanding of the role of the podiatrist as part of the interdisciplinary team
- Demonstrate an aseptic technique
- Show an understanding of the diagnosis, management and treatment of the 'High Risk' foot.
- Show an understanding of the various diagnostic techniques.
- Identify and critically discuss recent research studies in systemic conditions.

- Definition of 'The High Risk Foot'
- Aims in managing high risk patients
- Prevention and complications
- Management of established wounds, infection or necrosis
- History-taking and assessment
- Types of dressing for use in podiatric practice
- Other aspects of management
