TITLE Footwear in Health and Disease

UM LEVEL 03 - Years 2, 3, 4 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 6

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Podiatry

DESCRIPTION This is a theoretical based study-unit. This study-unit will help students develop a background on basic shoe styles and construction, footwear for specific foot conditions, aspects of therapeutic footwear and its prescription. Aspects of footwear as diagnostic, therapeutic and forensic media will also be investigated. Through this study-unit the students will understand and appreciate the role of the podiatrist in advising and prescribing an appropriate shoe in health and disease. Health behaviour change theories will also be discussed as changing footwear styles is one of the most challenging aspects of podiatry.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to provide students with specific knowledge ranging from the basic skills on advising a patient buying a good pair of shoes to footwear prescription and adaptations aimed at reducing discomfort and improving gait in specific foot pathologies and high risk populations.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
1] Describe the basic anatomy of a shoe and understand the function of individual components of a shoe.
2] Develop a general understanding and appreciation of the materials' properties used in the manufacturing of shoes.
3] Describe the processes involved in the manufacture of shoes.
4] Discuss the relationship between footwear and the development of lower extremity pathology.
5] Demostrate the basis of utilising shoe modifications as a therapeutic modality.
6] Recognize the importance of behavioural change theories and models to help motivate patients to change lifestyle patterns.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
1] Judge the suitability of specific footwear.
2] Evaluate its influence on foot pathologies.
3] Advice on an appropriate footwear.
4] Prescribe therapeutic footwear in the high risk population.
5] Apply behavioral change theories and models in their practice.
