CODE PRE1108

TITLE Teaching Primary Science

UM LEVEL 01 - Year 1 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Early Childhood and Primary Education

DESCRIPTION This study-unit introduces students to the historical development of primary science, emphasizing that science is a core subject of the primary curriculum and that teachers have to teach science regularly alongside other subject area. It then outlines the aims and benefits of teaching science to young children, reviews official national documents in the educational system relating to primary science education as well as the curricula currently present in state schools. The course provides some basic content background and some experience of science investigations with young children in those areas included in the primary science syllabus, highlighting the main focus on the process aspect of science at primary level. The study-unit also aims to highlight how children develop and hold scientifically ‘wrong’ ideas about a number of scientific phenomena before any formal education in science. It then moves on to tackle pedagogical theory in the teaching of science to young children, particularly, the constructivist approach. There will be some science practical sessions included as part of the course.
