DESCRIPTION An introductory communication study-unit designed to develop an understanding of the basic principles of the field of human communication. Topics covered will include the fundamentals of communication, interpersonal communication, and group communication.

Study-unit Aims:

Investigation of and experience with communication that facilitates the establishment and maintenance of effective personal relationships.

To understand speaker, listener, location, and message variables as related to comprehension.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding::
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Be familiar with intra-personal, interpersonal, small group communication;
- Understand the obstacles and difficulties pertaining to communication;
- Understand the skills that facilitate both verbal and non-verbal human communication;
- Be familiar with the research pertaining to communication in the areas of relationships, including conflict, conversation and small groups;
- Be aware of computer-mediated communication and the changes this has brought about.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Be more aware of communication dynamics;
- Be better able to listen and comprehend self and others;
- Be better able to give and receive feedback;
- Be better able to understand the dynamics of group communication and the skills that facilitate it.
