DESCRIPTION This study-unit will introduce the helping professions to the students. It will focus on how helping became an established profession in the 20th century as well as different approaches and techniques. The students will also have the chance to practice in helping situations through group-work.

Study-unit Aims

This study-unit intends to focus on helping, processing and facilitation skills. This study-unit is not meant to qualify successful candidates to be PSD Specialists, counsellors or to do counselling, but intends to:
1. offer a grounding in basic counselling theory,
2. provide training in the basic skills required for human helping and
3. enable the student to practice basic human helping and group facilitation skills.

The student will also be exposed to the theory and practice of processing.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Understand the theory, history and approaches of helping as well as the dynamics involved between the helper and the helpee

2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills): By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- The helping model – 3 stage model
- Attending Skills
- Listening
- The helping skills – basic empathy, probing, advanced empathy and challenging
