DEPARTMENT Psychology

DESCRIPTION This unit sets out the right and need of everyone to be valued and accepted in society, and challenges participants to consider the social exclusion and discrimination faced by members of minority groups within the dominant culture. Reference will be made to the impact of labeling and stigma on disadvantaged groups and to discriminatory processes and structures based on age, gender, sexual orientation, weight, ethnicity, religion, politics, disability, socioeconomic or immigrant status. It will provide an opportunity for participants to reflect on their own world views and values and to consider the variety of other perspectives linked to the diversity of human cultures. This will be complemented with the consideration of strategies for promoting inclusion, overcoming bias and prejudice and developing respectful intercultural communication, and ensuring the equal valuing of each individual both in interpersonal interaction and in the larger groupings of a democratic society.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to enable individuals to develop an understanding and respect for all persons whatever their characteristics, culture and background. It will raise awareness about each participant's own background culture and values as well as about the discrimination that individuals who differ in some way from the members of the dominant group tend to suffer at personal and systemic levels. It seeks to promote an understanding of the importance of the development of inclusive societies where everyone can experience a feeling of equal value and belongingness and is enabled to participate in the social, cultural, and economic activities and to contribute to the wellbeing of society.
