DESCRIPTION Part 1:

This part of the unit (18 contact hours in total) seeks to address the questions related to sexual, physical and emotional abuse. Part 1(a). addresses the issues of abuse on children and part 1(b) that on adults. The following pre-class preparation is needed:

Part 2:

The unit (9 contact hours) will also acquaint trainees with the field of addictions in its widest sense with particular emphasis on the local scene.
It will include an emphasis on the presentation of the various assessment tools, aetiological perspectives and treatment modalities.

Learning Outcomes:

Knowledge and understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

• know the theory and practice of dealing with sexual, physical, emotional abuse;
• Know about the different types of drugs and addiction, diverse aetiological perspectives, and different treatment modalities and to gain a wider perspective of the involved implications.

Skills:
By the end of the study-unit, the student will be able to:

• Be sensitive to the needs of clients with abuse difficulties;
• Engage therapeutically with such clients;
• Assess and formulate treatment plans that are informed by current research findings.

The unit will address the following questions: What are the different types of abuse (populations, means)? What causes abusive relationships to occur? What are the pathways to becoming an abuser and/or victim? Understanding the impact of abuse. Understanding the dynamics of an abusive relationship (IPV). What are the recommended treatment options for the abuser, the victim and, when appropriate, the relationship (IPV)? What are the recommended models for the treatment of sexual abuse in adult survivors? The assessment for this part of the study unit will consist of a case study followed by questions.

• Psychological evaluation - indicators, issues and concerns
• The language of suffering - understanding what is said and unsaid
• Overview of therapeutic techniques and issues in abuse focused individual therapy - victims vs survivors Expanding horizons - Other forms of therapy.

Substance abuse (Claudine Borg Azzopardi)

The study-unit will include 14 hours of class work with an emphasis on the presentation of the various assessment tools, aetiological perspectives and treatment modalities. Relevant literature will supplement each presentation. Trainees are expected to research a selected topic and present it to the class.
