DESCRIPTION This study-unit covers the principle factors involved in leading groups in different areas of psychology. It includes both a theoretical presentation of basic concepts to develop the necessary skills in planning, organising and leading groups. Topics covered include: stages of group development, group leadership, group dynamics, dealing with difficult situations and problem members; working with different types of groups; transference and countertransference. Students also have an opportunity to conduct a group and receive feedback on their own personal style of leading groups.

Study-unit Aims:

- To acquire theoretical knowledge in relation to leading psychological groups;
- To learn about groups in the different specializations in psychology;
- To develop skills in leading psychological groups;
- To learn how to develop a group programme based on a number of sessions;
- To learn about one’s assets and liabilities in practicing these skills;
- To give feedback to fellow students based on their observations.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate in-depth knowledge about the theory, research and practice of leading different psychological groups;
- Identify his/her strengths and areas of growth when leading process groups and psycho-educational groups;
- Analyse group processes occurring in psychological groups;
- Explain how to handle difficult members when leading psychological groups;
- Identify transference and counter-transference dynamics when leading psychological group;
- Define and describe ethical practices when leading psychological groups.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Plan, facilitate and evaluate groups in the psychology profession;
- Construct and structure a group programme that meets the needs of persons in a given context;
- Demonstrate competence in leading and facilitating both process oriented groups and psycho-educational groups;
- Demonstrate competence in leading and facilitating a psychological group with a co-leader.
