DESCRIPTION This study-unit will familiarise the student with the theoretical frameworks and therapeutic interventions with maltreated children and adults, and for addictive behaviours. Topics to be considered include a review of theory and research on assessment, counselling and psychotherapeutic skills in the assessment and treatment of abuse and neglect of children and on substance abuse and addictive behaviours.

Participants will also have the opportunity of reflecting on their own strengths and weaknesses in engaging in this area of psychological work.

This study-unit investigates in detail the causes, consequences, contextual factors and effective therapeutic interventions associated with child and adult maltreatment (abuse and neglect) and interventions for children and families. Maltreatment will be discussed within an ecological context, giving particular attention to issues of culture and diversity (e.g., race, gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, sexual identity, family structure). Practice dilemmas arising from these issues will also be briefly indicated.

This study-unit will also acquaint students with the field of addictions in its widest sense with particular emphasis on the local scene.
