DESCRIPTION This unit has a theoretical component which includes an overview of the treatment needs of offenders and areas addressed for the purpose of therapeutic interventions with this population. It provides an overview of treatment and programmes offered, their rationale, theoretical framework, aims and structure.

The unit also deals with specific issues relating to treatment and therapeutic services with offenders. A practical component teaches students the interventions’ underlying principles, techniques and core structure in a way that they shall be equipped with the necessary skills and tools in enabling clients through the change process.

Study-unit Aims:

The unit aims to familiarise students with issues relating to therapeutic interventions with offenders such as aims, principles and ethical issues, client motivation, denial or resistance as well as legal implications of treatment with offenders. The ultimate aim is to equip students with the necessary knowledge about treatment needs, interventions and programmes offered to offenders and to provide them with skills which enable them to be in a position to deliver evidence-based interventions which are generally offered to offenders within correctional systems.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

• demonstrate critical thinking skills by being able to identify the strengths and weaknesses of various therapeutic approaches;
• identify and explain the different treatment needs of offenders focusing on areas specific to the population and offending behaviour;
• demonstrate recognition of issues relating to interventions with offenders such as ethical issues, client motivation and resistance;
• describe the techniques involved in the different treatment approaches.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

• identify the treatment needs of offenders in relation to offending behaviour and cognitions;
• demonstrate competence in the delivery of therapeutic interventions with the awareness of issues relating to interventions with offenders in a way that they provide good and professional practice;
