DESCRIPTION Health psychologists work with different organizations and institutions. They are often brought in as consultants to facilitate, develop or enhance the effectiveness of others in the maintenance and improvement of human health. Within the local context, health psychologists also work with individuals experiencing diverse health problems in-patient, out-patient and community setting. This study unit is an in-depth exploration of measures and assessments related to health psychology, their aims, how to report findings and their implications to foster behaviour change.

Study-unit Aims:

This study unit aims to:
a. equip students with knowledge and skills on the use of various health psychology measures;
b. equip students with knowledge about various issues pertaining to measures and assessments in health psychology settings in their preparation towards professional practice;
c. equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary in order to be in a position to make critical decisions in their use of assessments and report writing;
d. provide an opportunity for students to practice the knowledge and skills learnt.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a. Describe and evaluate the various measures and assessments conducted by health psychologists in different settings;
b. Describe and evaluate the role of the health psychologist;
c. Evaluate the ethical principles and standards in health psychology practice;
d. Critically integrate different forms of assessments used in health psychology settings;
e. Critically interpret and evaluate findings on assessment in health psychology.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a. Demonstrate the ability to make critical decisions regarding the purpose of measures and assessments in health psychology;
b. Demonstrate competence in interpreting and reporting findings in health psychology assessment;
c. Demonstrate competence in administering the selected assessment, score, interpret and report the findings keeping in mind the clients’ and the service recipients’ needs whilst keeping within ethical and good professional practice;
d. Demonstrate critical interpretation of findings and interpretation of other psychologists’ reports;
e. Evaluate critically evidence-based research in health psychology assessment.
