TITLE Clinical Radiotherapy Practice 7: Linear Accelerator (LINAC)

UM LEVEL 04 - Years 4, 5 in Modular UG or PG Cert Course

MQF LEVEL 6

ECTS CREDITS 6

DEPARTMENT Radiography

DESCRIPTION This study-unit is designed to allow radiography students to apply theoretical knowledge and skills gained in previous years as well as to help them develop proficiency in competencies related to the treatment of patients undergoing external beam radiotherapy treatment on the linear accelerator.

The study-unit will include clinical demonstration and practical sessions to help guide students' practice and encourage the development of knowledge, skills and competences. In particular students will be expected to discuss principles and issues relating to the appropriate patient preparation prior to their radiotherapy treatment, positioning and immobilisation, patient communication, adaptation of techniques, treatment verification using image guided radiotherapy, critical thinking skills and radiation safety issues relating to a range of patients undergoing a external beam radiotherapy treatment in the clinical environment.

Students attend for 150 hours related to this study-unit during the academic year out of which 120 hours are assigned within both simulated and clinical environments, where students are expected to practice under the supervision of a radiographer , and 30 hours as student independent learning. Lecturing staff regularly meets the students for tutorials and gives each student feedback while ensuring the development of the required clinical competencies.

At the scheduled periods during the academic year a minimum of two members of staff conduct a clinical examination.

Study-Unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to allow students to develop knowledge, skills and competencies relating to performing a range of external beam radiotherapy treatments of patients with different needs. The student remains supervised by a qualified radiographer. Amongst others, this study unit will seek to encourage students to:

- Develop the skills and competencies required to perform various routine external beam radiotherapy treatments in line with established protocols and procedures;
- Practise safely by implementing the radiation protection rules in the Linear Accelerator.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Appraise the terminology used for different related clinical indications;
- Appraise and apply standard operating procedures and policies that need to be considered and adhered to when performing external beam radiotherapy treatment on patients;
- Discuss radiation safety principles and how they can be applied to clinical practice on patients;
- Discuss, apply and deliver common external beam radiotherapy treatments to patients.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Reach competency by carrying out the procedure/s consistently well and is able to adapt his/her technique to overcome difficulties safely. Pertinent problems typically arising from patient's condition may be those of positioning and immobilisation, patient preparation and image matching prior treatment delivery. An assessment of risk factors such as infection control and manual handling is implicit at this level.
