DEPARTMENT Radiography

DESCRIPTION The aim of this study-unit is to engage each student in a piece of relevant independent research related to radiography. Each student is guided through the stages of the research process by a supervisor and a project approval team. Some guiding lectures are given on how to define a research project; how to perform the research, including critical analysis of the literature and exploration of key research methodologies and how to analyse the results, perform appropriate statistical tests and draw conclusions. In May of the final year each successful student submits a dissertation of degree standard embodying the results of his/her research.

Study-unit Aims

The aims of the special project are to allow the student to:

1. Define his/her chosen area of investigation;
2. Develop relevant research questions;
3. Review the relevant literature;
4. Collect data, if applicable;
5. Integrate the empirical data into the wider context of the subject;
6. Draw conclusions/recommendations from the study.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Develop and structure arguments supported by evidence or citation;
2. Apply an appropriate, logical and reproducible study design;
3. Integrate results into a broader literature or theoretical, technical or professional framework;
4. Apply the research process to current practice within Radiography and develop greater professional autonomy.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Analyse, critically reflect and evaluate published literature in an appropriate and thorough manner;
2. Examine various methodological approaches and apply the appropriate design and methodology to the area under study;
3. Write a special project that displays evidence of research skills;
4. Work independently through the research process to produce a dissertation;
5. Develop a body of knowledge from which evidence based practice may evolve.
