DESCRIPTION With an increased scope of practice and professional accountability, this study unit provides demonstration of a level of practice and professional accountability, appropriate to level of skills. Students are provided with a sound knowledge of the management and care of CVADs. Performance of accurate assessment through identifying catheter specific indications, contraindications and associated risks. Utilising critical thinking skills and evidence based practice to achieve best patient outcomes. Confidently articulating scope of practice, identifying and acknowledging limitations and seeking assistance appropriately.

Lectures and practical sessions are interspersed with discussion so that students can apply the theoretical concepts to practice.
The nature of the study unit requires that students enrolling into this unit to have a strong sense of self-directed learning abilities in order to be successful in completing the study unit requirements.
The lecturer/s involved will adopt adult learning principles to this post-qualification course by using a range of teaching, learning and assessing strategies.

Study-Unit Aims:

Health care professionals, such as radiographers, use the learnt applications to address the needs of patients through good quality and efficient cost effective services. The skills and competencies learnt throughout this study unit, will contribute to more efficient and safer Medical Imaging procedures and/or Radiotherapy Services

The specific aim of this study unit is to enable health care professionals to be aware and competent with the use of CVADs for CM administration.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Categorize and define types of CVADs,
- Describe the anatomy and physiology of blood flow in relation to CVADs,
- Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each device,
- Discuss the principles of infection prevention and control,
- Identify the action of medications and drug precipitates.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify complications and describe prevention and management of each,
- Accurately document using the CVAD on appropriate forms,
- Demonstrate appropriate care and follow procedures when accessing any CVADs,
- Prepare patient for procedure,
- Apply a sterile non-touch technique during procedures,
- Identify and address procedural complications,
- Communicate adequate aftercare information for patients.
