| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is related to the image reading of screening and symptomatic mammograms, detecting and identifying any abnormalities, classifying those possible abnormalities, and then making a decision on the likely probabilities whether to recall the client/patient for further clinical assessment, with all the associated anxieties. Individual tuition in mammography image appreciation will be met in the clinical placement. Students are required to perform clinical placements in both screening and symptomatic breast clinics to read and appraise 2500 mammograms. Study-unit Aims: The aim of this study-unit is to provide students with the specialist skills and knowledge required to undertake accurate interpretation of mammographic images in screening and symptomatic services. It also aims to enable students to develop skills and competence to recording mammographic image findings appropriately, including making recommendations for further action as part of the assessment process. This will enable students to become effective members of the multidisciplinary team and make an important contribution to the diagnosis of breast disease and the breast imaging service. Apply evidence-based research to inform and review practice. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify and evaluate typical radiological appearances of normal breast anatomical structures and normal pattern variations and demonstrate their ability to practice in-depth mammographic feature interpretation; and - Identify mammograms with the following appearances that require further assessment: (a) calcification, (b) round masses, (c) irregular masses, (d) localised asymmetry and distortion. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Critically appraise mammograms in order to identify abnormal mammographic features; - Appraise the likelihood of the abnormality to be a significant lesion that requires further investigation; - Evaluate students own specific contribution as a mammographic image reader to the breast care service; - Audit practice; - Apply radiation safety principles; - Practice within a team; - Use evidence-based practice to perform imaging and review practice.
