DESCRIPTION This study unit will enable students to develop in-depth knowledge of the specific subject area on which they will be focusing in their research dissertation. Given the nature of this study-unit, the content will necessarily be tailored to each individual student, as per their research proposals. However, it is envisaged that the unit will draw on a variety of sources, including: (i) any relevant lectures offered by the Institute of Earth Systems, as well as by other Faculties/Institutes (as appropriate), and (ii) independent reading and research, under the guidance of Institute staff.

The combination of lectures/independent study for each student will be designed to ensure that the student obtains
(i) a comprehensive understanding of the subject area within which he/she proposes to work,
(ii) knowledge and understanding of relevant theoretical and conceptual discourses, and
(iii) knowledge and understanding of relevant case studies/experiences relating to the subject area.

The guidance provided by Faculty members in relation to independent reading/research will also ensure that students are familiar with key literature relating to the subject area.

Study-unit Aims

This study-unit aims:

- To enable students to develop an in-depth and comprehensive understanding of a specific subject area;
- To ensure students are familiar with key literature in a specific subject area;
- To develop a strong theoretical and conceptual basis for students' dissertation research project;
- To expose students to relevant experiences/case studies relating to their specific subject area.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate comprehensive understanding of a specified subject area;
- Identify and explain key discourses relevant to a specified subject area;
- Make reference to experiences/case studies relating to a specified subject area.

2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify literature sources relevant to a specified subject area;
- Critique key literature relevant to a specified subject area;
- Summarize the state of research in a specified subject area.
