DESCRIPTION This study-unit is divided into two parts: the first part consists of observations of how resilience building is facilitated through actual practice in varying contexts with children and young people; part 2 consists of supervised reflective practice in the development of resilience competences of children and young people. This study-unit can be considered as a capstone course where theory is directly connected with solid practice strategies of resilience building in children and young people.

Part 1 - Observation (50 hours)

Participants are guided to make relevant observations of the facilitation of resilience development in children and young people in varying contexts. Participants will be guided, through relevant checklists and observation tools as well as individual and group tutorials, to observe and critically analyse one of the following aspects of resilience building in children and young people and will report their observations through a portfolio:
- Resilience skills building;
- Relationships, communication skills, and classroom climate;
- Engagement: Pedagogy & implementation;
- Working with staff, parents and other professionals;
- Professionals’ own resilience, health & wellbeing.

Part 2 - Practice Placements (50 hours)

Course participants are expected to implement in their practice the facilitation of resilience development with children and young people. Their practice will be individually mentored through initially formative and later evaluative supervision and feedback. They will make use of planning and reflective writing and reflection to enhance their effectiveness.

During part 1 students will have 4 group tutorials of one hour each
During part 2 students will have two tutor onsite evaluation visits and 3 group evaluations

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to enable participants to develop competencies in effective, reflective practice in resilience education. - Recognize own strengths and difficulties in facilitating resilience building in children and young people;
- Evaluate the research literature on the promotion of resilience competences in children and young people.

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate self-reflective capacity in his/her observations and application of strategies and interventions;
- Demonstrate the ability to make relevant observations on, and critically analyse, the processes and systems that influence children’s and young peoples' acquisition of resilience competences both through direct interventions as well as through contextual, systemic processes;
- Demonstrate adequate resilience competences when implementing practice sessions that engage children and young persons and enhance their resilience skills;
- Demonstrate the ability to create a resilience enhancing climate in particular contexts for children and young people and critically analyze how effective they are in doing so;
