TITLE Pauline Writings and Acts of the Apostles

UM LEVEL 02 - Years 2, 3 in Modular Undergraduate Course

DESCRIPTION This study-unit will have two parts: Pauline Writings, and Acts of the Apostles.

Part One: Paul's contribution to the living and spreading of the Christian message within the emerging church and beyond will be analyzed in the light of his conversion/call/commission event on the Road to Damascus. Consequently, an analysis of how the 'Christ Event' and his Gospel were assimilated by the apostle Paul in his life and proclaimed in his preaching and letters. Pauline Theology according to the letters and hermeneutics of Paul's main theological contributions in a synchronic overview will finally be given.

Part Two: The figure of Peter will be analyzed as the protagonist of the first half of Acts and the link between the Gospel tradition and Acts.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims at presenting the figure of Paul as a major contributor to the living and spreading of the Christian message within the emerging church and beyond.

It also aims to analyze the figure of Peter as the protagonist of the first half of Acts and the link between the Gospel tradition and Acts of the Apostles.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- identify a working chronology for studying Paul;
- identify and illustrate how Paul's Damascus Event was the turning point that influenced his whole life and theology;
- summarize Paul's contribution to Christianity in founding, evangelizing and nurturing Christian communities, who in turn became evangelizers themselves;
- trace the main contours of Paul's theology as a Theology of the Cross;
- outline Peter's figure in the Acts of the Apostles as the link between the Gospel tradition and subsequent theological reflection by the nascent Church.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- adapt and construct a working chronology for any study of Paul's life and letters;
- assess Paul's Damascus Event as a commission to evangelize Gentiles that had deep consequences upon Paul's life and his theological contribution to Christianity;
- evaluate Paul's letters in a holistic approach and synthesize their contents as a Theology of the Cross that is a matrix for all branches of theological thought;
- construct the main lines of the depiction by the author Luke of Peter in Acts of the Apostles that symbolizes the link between the Gospel tradition and subsequent life of the Church.
