DESCRIPTION A study-unit in Brazilian Portuguese directed at previous participants of Portuguese 1. It will be necessary for students to have acquired the basic knowledge provided in Portuguese 1 as it will provide a continuation of the learning acquired in the first module. This study-unit will look at more advanced aspects of the grammar as well as tackling more advance topics. Each class will address a specific grammatical aspects of the language as well as a revision and reinforcement of previous lessons.

Like SPA2023, this study unit is aimed primarily at equipping students with language skills but will continue with an examination of Brazil, its peoples and cultures, choosing to focus on more advanced topics such as Brazilian music, food, geography, social issues, current affairs in Brazil etc. Themes learnt in Portuguese 1 will be reviewed and knowledge regarding these topics expanded.

The grammar points to be reviewed are:
- The present, the past perfect, the imperfect the simple future, conditional and Imperative of regular and irregular verbs (as a revision of the previous study unit) In addition, the present subjunctive, imperfect subjunctive, pluperfect subjunctive and future subjunctive will be introduced.
- Prepositions, pronouns, adjectives masculine and feminine, plural and comparisons, interrogatives, will be reviewed from the 1st module and additionally, the study unit will look at negatives, simple expressions, relative pronouns, indefinites.

The focus is on accuracy as well as communicating with native speakers and being able to express desires, describing feelings and objects, recounting stories in the past and projecting to the future. The student will be able to identify and use common idioms and useful verbs and expressions.

The unit should enable the student to feel confident to engage in conversations involving common everyday situations; read with confidence texts on a variety of themes including some less familiar themes such as the society and culture of Brazil; Be able to employ a wide range of grammatical structures to express themselves, understand stories; write correctly on familiar themes.

Study-unit Aims:

This unit aims to follow up Portuguese 1. It aims to broaden the students' communicative scope and confidence in reading, listening, speaking and writing.

It aims to enable students to recognise, understand and employ a wide range of grammatical structures in Portuguese whilst enabling them to communicate effectively with native speakers.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Understand short stories, texts, articles and simple dialogue (radio, television).
- Recognise and understand a variety of different tenses in the Portuguese language and use these to express themselves in the spoken and written language.
- Understand Brazilian culture, history and society.
- Read and understand short texts and find specific information in Portuguese.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Interact in Portuguese on a variety of familiar topics (asking and answering questions, expressing wishes) using familiar everyday expressions and phrases.
- Write descriptive texts in Portuguese on familiar themes and in different tenses.
- Ask and answer questions in areas of immediate needs or familiar topics.
- Communicate in Portuguese with native speakers including ability to express wishes and preferences.

The main material will be prepared by the lecturer and will be distributed to the students at the beginning of the study-unit.
