DESCRIPTION This study-unit aims to develop an in-depth understanding of various concepts and theories in music studies from a sociological viewpoint. It explores the role of music in social interactions, identity formation, politics and industrial processes. In a form of a cross-disciplinary approach, this study-unit explores the forms and roles of music in society as well as the way music is a medium of human expression and communication.

Study-unit Content:

- Introduction: Studying music sociologically;
- Embeddedness of musical meaning;
- Classical sociological studies on music: Simmel, Weber and Adorno;
- Music and social distinctions: Classical and Pop music;
- Music as identity – Ethnicity and music;
- Omnivorization of musical tastes;
- The music industry and the making of teenage;
- Music and Subcultures;
- Punk’s not dead - Generational difference in musical taste;
- Music in everyday life;
- iPod culture and urban experience;
- Contemporary studies: Music Sociology;
- Globalisation and music;
- The local context.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aims of this study-unit include:

- acquaint students with the principles on sociological studies on music;
- stimulate critical thinking in the interpretation of music;
- acquaint students with critical thinking skills to formulate sociological arguments in writing;
- assist students in applying and discussing the contribution of music in social relations.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- identify and analyse different sociological approaches in the sociology of music;
- discuss the topic within the broader societal context;
- apply and discuss the contribution of music in social relations.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- demonstrate critical thinking skills and clearly formulate sociological arguments in writing;
- reflect on one's own social standing by acquiring a sociological imagination on their music tastes;
- produce an informed discussion on selected themes in sociology of music.
