DESCRIPTION Study-Unit Aims:

A sociological investigation of social movements. The study-unit integrates theory and methodology and applies them to the study of social movements.

Unit content includes various theoretical and methodological approaches; the analysis of political and cultural movements; and the analysis of social movement organisations, ideas and activities. Both classical and contemporary approaches to the study of social movements will be discussed during the study unit. Topics under investigation include ideology, discourse and frames; online and offline activism; protest; networks; collective action; resource mobilization; political opportunity structures; resource mobilization; identity, contention and institutionalisation. The interaction of structure and agency will be discussed through case studies, both historical and current.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to sociologically analyse collective behaviour and analyse social movements, resources, opportunities and processes from a sociological perspective;
The student will also be able to analyse protest and to analyse the importance of sociological constructs such as identity, structure and agency and different dimensions of power and networks (macro, micro); The student will be able to trace the development, application and interpretation of ideologies , discourses and frames, and will be able analyse the relationship of social movements with other factors within society.

2. Skills

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to interpret and analyse key aspects of social movements, sociologically reflect and critically engage with social movements;

The student will also be able to apply the course material to analyse specific social issues, processes and case studies and to write a scholarly paper.
