DEPARTMENT Statistics and Operations Research

DESCRIPTION In this study-unit the following topics will be covered:

1. Introduction to the interface of the statistical software used.

2. Test for Normality:
- Kolmogorov-Smirnov Test;
- Shapiro Wilk Test.

3. Parametric Tests:
- On Sample T-test;
- Independent Samples T-test;
- Paired Samples T-test;
- Anova (one way and repeated measures).
- Pearson Correlation Coefficient

4. Non-Parametric Tests:
- Sign Test;
- Mann Whitney Test;
- Wilcoxon signed rank test;
- Kruskal Wallis test;
- Friedman test;
- Spearman correlation coefficient.
- Kendall correlation coefficient

5. Statistical Models:
- Regression Models;
- ANOVA and ANCOVA Models;
- Logistic Regression Models.

6. Categorical Data Analysis:
- Chi Squared Test for independence.

7. Students will learn how to conduct all the above tests using a number of statistical software packages.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit has four aims:

The first aim is to review a number of statistical tests. Each test can be used to draw a specific conclusion when studying specific data sets. Hence, choosing the ideal statistical test is of paramount importance.

Once the correct statistical test has been identified, then the next step is to implement this test using statistical software packages.

The correct interpretation of the software output is extremely important, as this will enable the student to draw a number of conclusions on the data being analysed.

Finally students will learn how to combine all the software outputs and their interpretations to create a report which contains a thorough analysis of the data set being studied.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Identify the correct statistical tests to analyse the data set,
- Implement the statistical test or tests in a statistics software package,
- Interpret correctly the statistical software output and draw the correct conclusion,
- Provide a written report which contains a thorough analysis of the data set.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Identify the correct statistical tests to use on specific data sets,
- Use with ease various statistical software packages,
- Learn how to write a statistical report.
