DESCRIPTION The study of an aspect of Spanish language, literature or culture presented in the form of a dissertation (12,000-18,000 words). This will involve providing an overview of some theoretical approaches in Spanish and Latin American Studies; the selection of suitable bibliographic materials and the management of sources; the identification of frameworks of thinking; and the submission of a statement of intent identifying the chosen topic to be approved, supervised by a tutor who will provide guidance concerning the framework for the enquiry and key source material.

The student will be expected to make presentations to and participate in small group seminars, attend individual tutorials and submit initial drafts prior to the submission of the final draft.

Study-unit Aims

- To develop the ability to study in depth an approved topic of the student's own choosing.
- Develop ability in the writing of a scholarly approach to an intellectual enquiry.
- Be able to differentiate between fact, interpretation and assertion.
- Use concepts as interpretative tools.
- Write in a disciplined way utilizing appropriate academic conventions and expressing ideas effectively.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- demonstrate the ability to study in depth an approved topic of his/her own choosing in the field of Spanish and Latin American studies.

2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- demonstrate the ability to write in a scholarly approach to an intellectual enquiry.
- write in a disciplined way utilizing appropriate academic conventions and expressing ideas effectively.

ADDITIONAL NOTES **September Assessment Session: Students who fail to obtain an overall pass mark will be re-examined in the Dissertation. However, the resit availability for the Oral Examination is at the discretion of the Board of Examiners.
