Study-Unit Description

CODE SPI5713

TITLE Advanced Urban Design Theory and Practice

UM LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

MQF LEVEL 7

ECTS CREDITS 5

DEPARTMENT Spatial Planning and Infrastructure

DESCRIPTION By means of a series of formal lectures, seminars and workshops, this study-unit intends to provide a deeper understanding of the key theories underpinning urban space development, and the factors that influence the practice of urban design. Comprising theory, knowledge and practice-oriented teaching, the study-unit exposes students to key texts dealing with urban design and urban development, focusing primarily on the contested nature of urban space, and the considerations required on the part of the designer to deal with different socio-spatial challenges.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to address:
- The theoretical development of urban design, inviting students to reflect upon key theoretical writings and contemporary case studies;
- The synthesis of theory with practice through the opportunities for addressing contemporary design problems and/or socio/spatial challenges.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Apply theoretical knowledge from various sources to identify and analyze specific urban design issues;
- Develop key urban design project presentation, and team-working skills;
- Understand the role of urban design as a mediator in the socio-spatial environment.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Apply socio-spatial theories to design problems;
- Synthesize and apply knowledge to practice (problem definition and creative problem-solving);
- Synthesize key theoretical texts to develop a position about a particular urban design issue.
