Study-Unit Description

CODE SPI5772

TITLE Transport Engineering 2

UM LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

MQF LEVEL 7

ECTS CREDITS 5

DEPARTMENT Spatial Planning and Infrastructure

DESCRIPTION In this study-unit students will deepen their knowledge and understanding of road transport policy, planning, design, construction and management. Through the concepts of resource efficiency, material whole life considerations and more efficient planning processes and construction methods, students will be able to appreciate how the policies of sustainable mobility can be actually implemented.

Topics to be covered include: design of roadside elements, intelligent transport systems, designing safe roads and roadside environments, climate change adaptation measures and sustainable use of road materials.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aims of the study unit are to present students with a combined approach of policy and engineering principles and techniques in relation with the following topics:

- Design of roadside elements;
- Intelligent transport systems;
- Designing safe roads and roadside environments;
- Climate change adaptation measures;
- Sustainable use of road materials.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of the latest developments in each of the topics through adequate literature reviews;
- Compare the business as usual approach versus elements of resource efficiency and a more sustainable approach through a review of latest policy and technical developments.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Describe and critically appraise the ways in which specific engineering developments are shaped by transport policy through a researched assignment;
- Present and discuss the outcome of their research through a presentation;
- Raise arguments on each specific topic through seminars.
