TITLE Interdisciplinary Aspects of Migration

UM LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

MQF LEVEL Not Applicable

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Social Policy and Social Work

DESCRIPTION This study-unit seeks to introduce students to the living situation of migrants by looking both at the large-scale international and national events and processes being migration on the one hand, and the personal experiences of the migrants. It will give an overview of the main historical events that led to and accompanied migratory movements. The focus will be on recent migration. The impact of migration, at its various stages, on groups and individuals will be examined, as it affected migrants belonging to cultures more familiar to most students, special attention being given to European and Maltese migrants.

This will prepare the way to the examination of the same issues with regard to immigrant movements and groups common in the Mediterranean and especially Malta. A basically anthropological approach will be taken, open to historical, and socio-political factors and events, in an attempt to move from a transdisciplinary understanding of the situation to an empathic understanding of the experience of individuals and groups, in the light of events and processes ranging from pre-departure, to travel, reception and integration or repatriation, looking at the experience and impact of security, reception and welfare measures, services and settings.

Study-unit Aims:

Introduce student to the international and political events and situations that have led and influence migratory movements, the unfolding process of the migratory experience, as well as their impact on individual and groups, in a way that paves the way to appropriate interaction and service.
