CODE SWP5107

TITLE Practicum and Supervision

UM LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

MQF LEVEL 7

ECTS CREDITS 5

DEPARTMENT Social Policy and Social Work

DESCRIPTION This study-unit will consist of two components, namely a practical component and a theoretical component which will focus on supervision. The practical component will consist of fifty hours of direct practice.

The practicum component of the study-unit will offer students first-hand experience of practice in Family Mediation. During their attachment to the Family Mediation service students will be assigned a Fieldwork Teacher who will induct them into Family Mediation Practice, allocate tasks and provide regular supervision of the student's practice. During the induction period students will be expected to shadow their Fieldwork Teachers in their Family Mediation Practice. After this induction period they will be allocated X cases which they will follow through themselves under the close supervision of their Fieldwork Teacher. Students will be expected to undertake 5 hours of practice per week over a ten week period.

A University Tutor will be allocated to each student and will meet with the student and Fieldwork Teacher at the beginning and end of the placement. The University Tutor and Fieldwork Teacher, in discussion with the student, will draw up an assessment report of the student's practicum. This will be used by the Board of Examiners for Practicum and Supervision as a basis for determining the mark/grade for the Practicum component of the study-unit.

The second part of the study-unit will be dedicated to the knowledge and skills of supervision. Supervision will be explored from both a theoretical and applied perspective. Supervision functions, supervision policies, standards of practice for supervision, the supervision relationships, and group supervision will be considered from the supervisees' perspective.
