DESCRIPTION This study-unit presents the lives of famous technologists and their achievements. Through the analysis of biographical accounts, this study-unit exposes the 'human behind the genius' while providing a context of life conditions and events around particular inventions through history. It also presents information about the patenting process and support systems which are currently available to potential inventors.

Study-Unit Aims:

- To analyze the lives of technologists who had a major impact on society through their inventions;
- To inform about the patenting process and related support systems.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify the inventors behind the inventions;
- Contextualize the inventions within historic events of society;
- Discuss why modern inventing usually depends on a team of multidisciplinary professionals;
- Discuss the importance of good communication methods and scientific/mathematical/technological rigour that are essential toward the acceptance of a new invention by a community of experts;
- Differentiate between different types of intellectual property.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Discuss the patenting process;
- Become aware of support systems available to potential inventors;
- Become aware of how to patent / trademark at local and European levels;
- Conduct a patent search.
