DESCRIPTION This study-unit provides pre-service student teachers with an understanding curriculum development, assessment and quality assurance in vocational education and training (VET) within compulsory education and beyond. It also considers informal and non-formal assessment and the close relationship between the world of work and VET experienced by secondary education students. The study-unit provides learners with the opportunity to explore different assessment and quality assurance strategies for VET and the various challenges which arise from the context of vocational learning.

Study-Unit Aims:

The study-unit exposes pre-service teachers to the assessment and quality assurance processes within different VET learning contexts. This study-unit will therefore focus on a number of case-studies models applied with constructive learning of which: work-placement; internship; traineeships; project-based learning; apprenticeship and life-cases. This study-unit will provide pre-service teachers with an understanding of the key quality assurance tool at European level (EQAVET) and its relevance to teaching VET at compulsory level and how this compares to international educational quality assurance processes.

The study-unit will provide pre-service teachers with the notion of quality for education and training; definitions of quality control, quality assurance and total quality; the educational product and services; education and its customers; the notion of continuous improvement; effects of quality culture/s; barriers to quality culture; quality assurance tools and techniques for educational practitioners.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- apply the theoretical concepts of vocational assessment within a classroom/work-based context;
- develop vocational quality assurance strategies effectively for curriculum development;
- analyze the impact of quality assurance in education and training.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- respond creatively to the challenges facing the vocational educational sector;
- develop assessment and quality assurance specific competences and processes to enhance VET within secondary schools.
