DESCRIPTION Students will pursue a directed research project, under the supervision of a member of staff who is to be consulted on the choice of the topic researched as well as kept informed on how the research is proceeding. Students will be directed to (a) formulate a research proposal; (b) identify and put in practice pertinent methodologies; and (c) present results in seminar and/or written form.

The research topic will have a clear 21st-century dimension either with regard to the subject or to the methodologies used. It may also consist of a practical assignment or contain a practical component.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to:
(a) implement procedures pertinent to theatre and performance research projects, including: the identification of a research topic/question, aims and objectives, methodologies involved, programme of work, and results/conclusions;
(b) extend the 21st-century dimension of the MA to include research practices;
(c) contribute to the research profile of the Theatre Studies Department and the School of Performing Arts;
(d) articulate and present relevant findings in suitable scholarly forms.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

(a) write research proposals that are appropriate to Masters level;
(b) conduct in-depth research and find appropriate methodologies to tackle specific areas of study in theatre and performance from a 21st-century perspective, even when the subject matter relates to other centuries;
(c) apply material generated from their research to written assignments, with an emphasis on a Masters-level of writing that goes beyond mere description;
(d) understand, contextualise, and relate practical, historical, theoretical aspects of theatre and performance, depending on the research area identified.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

(a) understand the various procedures necessary to carry out academic research;
(b) carry out an independent project that relies primarily on their own understanding of the methodologies and topic involved;
(c) generate research material and present in a logical and convincing manner;
(d) link the research practices and topics involved with broader realities that are not necessarily theatre and performance oriented.
