DESCRIPTION The aims of this study-unit are:

- To look at the background to Computer-Aided Translation (CAT), its current position and likely future developments;
- To raise awareness of how the development of CAT tools is affecting the translating profession;
- To offer some insights into the basic design principles, linguistic problems and modes of use;
- To give hands-on experience of Machine Translation, Translation Memories and Termbases.

Content Summary:

This study-unit introduces students to the technology currently available for translation purposes. It is intended to present the various benefits that may be obtained by using computer hardware, software and the internet in the fields of post-editing and translation.The study-unit covers various topics related to Computer-Aided Translation (CAT). They range from hardware and office software tools, online resources such as corpora, dictionaries and terminology databases, to cloud computing, machine translation, translation memory tools and terminology management. The unit also includes a practical component which is focused on post-editing and the use of translation memory software.

Study-Unit Aims:

- To introduce the necessary hardware and software required for translation purposes;
- To identify, evaluate and use the online resources available to translators, especially search engines, corpora, dictionaries, termbases and information websites;
- To familiarize with post-editing practices and the use of translation memory tools;
- To provide the students with the theoretical and practical competence required for the industry’s international CAT recognition and certification.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Recognise the difference between machine translation and translation memory tools;
- Describe the various approaches in machine translation and how they work;
- Identify the appropriate technological resources for a specific translation project;
- Review machine translated raw output for post-editing purposes;
- Practise post-editing of machine translated texts in various domains;
- Analyse machine translation output to identify recurring translation errors ;
- Compare translation technology tools to identify the most suitable resource for a specific translation project;
- Research information using advanced online search tools;
- Create translation projects, translation memories, termbases and corpora;
- Evaluate translation technology tools and resources.
