| DESCRIPTION | The study-unit will cover in detail the qualitative and quantitative research techniques used in tourism research. It will cover the principles of research design and the writing of research proposals, the generation of ideas for research and mapping, the nature of data. The unit will also cover different qualitative and quantitative methodologies used in tourism research including Delphi studies, surveys, Grounded theory, case studies, CBAs, feasibility, image analysis and content analysis. Data analysis using statistical and qualitative analysis will be also covered. Students will be able to put the techniques and methodologies learnt through a field research session. Study-unit Aims Conducting research is an integral part of the skills required by a university student. The main objective of this study-unit is to equip you with the necessary skills required to conduct individual research. Fieldwork sessions are meant to take students on the field to experience at first hand the impacts of tourism on the Maltese Islands. Fieldworks session are held over a 4-5 day period in the island of Gozo where an in-depth analysis of tourism development is conducted using different methodologies such as observation, qualitative research, in-depth interviews etc. Areas of focus include: beaches and resorts, urban tourism, the impact of tourism on the environment, society and the culture of the area. Learning Outcomes 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Map research problems; - Identify ways to solve research problems; - Understand the relevance of the different methodologies used in tourism and heritage, culture analysis; - Design research tools; - Conduct group research - in the field; - Design research tools; - Analyse data. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Gain analytical skills that will help the student to assess the manner and the extent of how external (such as political , economic, environmental) and internal (such as organisational) factors influence or effect the sector; - Conduct individual research; - Write a good research documents.
