DESCRIPTION This study-unit introduces the concepts used to understand the relationship between transport and tourism and the characteristics of different forms of passenger transport. The role, function and operational characteristics of various modes of passenger transport form the foundations of the transport sector in tourist destinations. In view of current and future challenges, service providers of travel and transportation business are regularly adopting effective measures to meet the needs of the tourism market.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to develop an understanding and an appreciation of the relationship between tourism and transportation. The candidates will examine tourism transportation modes and their journey characteristics, discussing the future potential of these modes to accommodate anticipated levels of tourist demand.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Examine the impacts of tourism on transport systems;
- Explain the management of land, water and air transportation systems that support travel and tourism;
- Appraise issues in transportation management and planning;
- Assess the variety and role of land, water and air transport systems;
- Evaluate the importance of transport links in island economies, air transport development and management (with particular reference to low cost carriers), sea transportation and transport externalities.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Argue the pros and cons of the different transport modes;
- Design effective transport links that a potential visitor will use from home to destination and back;
- Demonstrate the understanding of the way in which transport interacts with other aspects such as the environment, the built environment.
