| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will provide an insight into the principles of cultural tourism, its development in the world and its relevance to the Maltese context. The unit will also examine who cultural tourists are, what their motivations are, and how they behave. It will also encourage the student to critically evaluate the way in which cultural tourism can develop sustainably, with the aim of bringing about social and economic development in the areas where it takes place. The unit will also cover areas such as the economic relevance of cultural tourism, the role of the European Cultural Capital and the cultural offer. Study-unit Aims The aim of this unit is to familiarise the students with the basic principles of cultural tourism and its importance in the field of modern-day tourism. It will highlight the role of cultural tourism to the economy and to the sustainable management of the cultural heritage Learning Outcomes 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Define cultural tourism; - Define cultural tourists; - Identify the principles that can lead to the development of cultural tourism; - Demonstrate an understanding of how culture can enhance the tourism experience and how tourism can bring about a better understanding of one's cultural heritage. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify literature based (internet and printed) research on specific themes related to the topic under discussion; - Present an argument in a coherent manner; - Conduct research on assigned topics; - Present and defend own arguments in the seminar and during the presentation.
