TITLE Data Gathering and Analysis 2

UM LEVEL 02 - Years 2, 3 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Tourism Management

DESCRIPTION This study-unit focuses on data acquisition and analysis for inductive studies. It primarily outlines the importance of inductive studies and how these are applied by different researchers.
This unit explores the various facets of qualitative data gathering. In doing so it primarily differentiates whether the study is the result of a previous research exercise.
The study-unit also focuses on the critical importance of developing a conceptual research framework for proper guidance.
In addition this unit specifically refers to different methods of qualitative data gathering ranging from observation, interviews and focus groups amongst others and then leads into different methods of qualitative data analysis. The unit also outlines the general outcomes of an exploratory study.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to develop the concept of data gathering, analysis and modelling using qualitative methods of research. This study-unit encourages students to further explore the fundamentals of data gathering and analysis. In order for students to understand the concepts of data gathering and analysis in tourism studies, students are provided with insights into the elements of research design and planning that lead up to the data collection process. Through practical learning, effective data collection, analyses and interpretation of data, students will be able to develop a better decision-making process, based on acquired data and trend analysis. The content will enable them to better understand the meaning of data and the insights that it reveals.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Evaluate the reasons behind inductive research;
- Assess how to frame inductive studies and subsequently how to set proper research questions;
- Justify different methods of data gathering for qualitative research and their respective applicability;
- Explore how to frame the results of qualitative studies into models for further research.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Explore a good conceptual research model, taking into account the various internal and external aspects as well as the research question;
- Research a tourism related area using different qualitative methods, depending on the research study (defined by the research objectives and the research questions);
- Analyse qualitative data using different methods as applicable using different steps as outlined in the science data analysis for qualitative data;
- Write conclusions and models as potential areas for future research.
