| DESCRIPTION | In this study-unit students will be provided with the opportunity to increase their awareness of the art of translating literature (fiction, poetry, drama, essays, biography, songs). It will introduce students to various aspects of literary translation, including the connection between theory and practice, coming to terms with practical challenges, dealing with different cultural backgrounds, and the stimulation of translators’ creative effort. Therefore the study-unit will examine some of the relevant theories of language, literature, and communication relating to pragmatics, discourse analysis, stylistics, and cognitive linguistics. Students will be guided to explore the complex ways in which meaning and style can be translated, by discussing varied translating descriptions by different translators to examine the strategies and choices, the implications created by those choices, and discussing various translation tools. The study-unit will also help students to gain a working knowledge of the critical context and the literary potentials of translation and to understand translation processes. Furthermore, because of the growing semiotic complexity of some contemporary works the course will enable students to gain familiarity with various multimodal forms for the purpose of translation. Study-Unit Aims: This study-unit aims: - to familiarise students with the various aspects of literary translation; - to guide students to explore the complex ways in which meaning and style can be translated; - to equip students with the necessary tools for literary translation. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - analyse literary texts in English and Maltese; - distinguish between literary styles; - use the right linguistic and stylistic elements in literary translation. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - discover the proper translating strategies related to the different literary genres; - examine possible linguistic alternatives when dealing with literary texts; - use translation skills in literary translation; - find suitable equivalents.
