| DESCRIPTION | Students will be able to provide a fluent and effective simultaneous interpretation of speeches in English, Italian or two EU languages of at least 10-12 minutes duration into the target language (Maltese), accurately reproducing the content of the original and using appropriate terminology and register. Students will be trained in booth techniques and team interaction. The speeches used will confront the students with a diversity of subject areas, styles, and registers, and their length, information density and degree of technicality and specificity will increase as the study-unit progresses. Once they have acquired simultaneous interpreting skills, students will also be taught how to interpret with the text in front of them. Study-Unit Aims: - Teach the students the skills they need to interpret simultaneously in institutional settings and beyond, both on site and remotely; - Prepare the students to work as interpreters in conference settings and beyond. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify the different skills required for simultaneous interpretation, such as anticipation and effectively dealing with a time lag; - Have a good insight into the preparation required for simultaneous interpretation assignments. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Provide a fluent and effective simultaneous interpretation of speeches in English, Italian or another EU language of at least 10 to 12 minutes into the target language (Maltese), accurately reproducing the content of the original and using appropriate terminology and register; - Professionally prepare for simultaneous interpretation assignments, e.g. by means of information retrieval techniques; - Effectively work with a booth mate; - Provide simultaneous interpretation both on site and remotely. | ADDITIONAL NOTES | The students’ A language (native language) must be Maltese. Students must be proficient in English or Italian as a B language (near-native level). If they do not have a B language, they must have two C languages (official EU languages, one of which must be English, French or German). The students’ proficiency will be assessed prior to the course through a compulsory aptitude test. The aptitude test will be held during the first half of September 2024. Additional A and B languages may be added in the future. The course description will be revised annually based on the language profiles in demand with the EU interpreting services and the available resources. The current profile is: A + B or A + CC.
