DESCRIPTION This course will build on the basic introduction to photography given to students in the first semester in Visual Design Tools 1. It will encourage students to explore this medium further through a mix of lectures, guided workshops, fieldwork and feedback sessions that will help the students expand their use of the medium and build a photography portfolio on which they will be graded. In addition to this the students will be given workshops in studio lighting and object modeling for workflow documentation purposes. The course will also focus on arming the students with advanced image post processing skills to supplement their creative visual output and presentation techniques.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to provide students with additional skills to add to their visualisation tool set in image capturing and post processing, and to provide them with another channel to hone their compositional skills. Furthermore it will also allow students who want to explore the subject further to do so.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Know about different types of cameras and understand when to use them;
- Know how to light and capture different subjects from Architecture, to small models to 2D objects;
- Differentiate between types of studio lights, strobes and flashes and know how to control them;
- Know about different post processing techniques and processes;
- Know most advanced functions of image editing applications and have a very good working knowledge of them;
- Understand the difference between, and know when to use, different output file formats.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Use the advanced functions of an SLR camera;
- Use studio lights, strobes and flashes correctly;
- Use light, shade, depth and perspective to interpret scale models;
- Use advanced features of digital darkroom applications;
- Create complex digital images and collages;
- Document and present their work processes through photography;
- Build and reference a library of images and textures for use in other projects;
- Put together and present a well composed portfolio.
