DESCRIPTION This study-unit follows from a related study-unit offered in Semester 1. The overall objectives of the study-unit remain the same as for Semester 1. It will continue the survey of evolution of architecture, art and design from late 19th century till today. The study-unit continues the investigation of the major movements in architecture, fine art and design, which also include industrial and product design, graphic design as mirror of social, cultural, and technological ideas within broadly defined cultural context.

Study-Unit Aims:

The objectives of this study-unit continue on those of VSA 1991. The ultimate objectives are to:

- Give students the experience in engaging in creative research processes and producing materials of documentation and contextualisation that can be both resourceful and imaginative in their form, articulation and presentation.
- Allow students to acquire innovative presentation skills which is extremely important in the field of the creative arts and practices (including, of course, architecture) as a way to share knowledge and communicate work to others.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify and understand the most important periods in architectural, art and design history of the last century;
- Get to know and discuss major architectural, art and design exponents and movements of the last century;
- Place their own work within a historical context.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

read 20th century culture movements, whilst:

- developing and undertaking research practice;
- making presentations, and developing communication and intellectual skills;
- engaging in independent contribution and effort;
- engaging in teamwork, group interaction and collaboration.

- History of Modern Art: Painting, Sculpture, Architecture, Photography by H. H. Arnason.
- The Story of Art by EH Gombrich.
